Description
Marcus Julius Philippus, known by his nickname of Philip the Arab, was born in Arabia Petraea, the Roman province of Arabia and was of Arab descent. He was the Praetorian Prefect with Gordian III when he died on campaign against Persia. After quickly negotiating peace with the Persian Empire, he returned to Rome and was confirmed as Augustus by the Senate. During his reign, the city of Rome celebrated its millennium. Among early Christian writers, Philip had the reputation of being sympathetic to the Christian faith. Philip was overthrown and killed following a rebellion led by his successor, Trajan Decius.
