Description
Gratian was the eldest son of Valentinian I and achieved some victories against the German tribes on the Rhine, being the last to lead a Roman expedition beyond the frontier. A staunch Christian he removed some of the last vestiges of traditional Roman religion from the functions of the state, refusing divination for himself and removing the Altar of Victory from the Senate.
