Description
The Sunga Empire was an ancient Indian dynasty that controlled vast areas of modern day central and eastern India and Bangladesh. Patrons of the arts, this period saw important developments in Hindu thought and the construction of the famous Buddhist stupa at Bharhut. There does however, appear to have been a bias towards promoting Hindu Brahmanism at the expense of Buddhism. The Sungas were often at war with the Indo-Greeks to their west and the strength of Graeco-Buddhist culture in those lands may help to explain their hostility if any.
