Description
This coastal region of modern day northeast Libya was a fertile land famed for its native Silphium plant, prized as a seasoning and medicine across the classical world. Demand for the plant was so great that it became extinct in the 1st century AD. Cyrenaica, was founded by Greek colonists from Thera in the 7th century BCE before being conquered by the Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty in the 3rd century BCE.
