Description

Details

These crude but imaginative copies of official Roman types circulated widely in Britain, Gaul and along the Rhine and Danubian frontiers. They were traditionally seen as the work of barbarian tribes striking them for their own internal use beyond the frontiers. However, they might also be seen as local or even semi-official response to a shortage of official coinage within the empire.
