Description
The House of Romanov is the greatest dynasty in Russian history. The Romanovs elevated Russia from tsardom to empire, from backwater actor concentrated around a few eastern cities to one of the greatest nation-states in Europe. At its greatest extent, the Russian Empire stretched from Archangel on the White Sea to the Crimea on the Black, and from the Baltic Sea in the east all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and included vast swaths of Finland and Poland as well as Russian America—the colony of Alaska, sold to the United States for $7.2 million in 1867. The dynasty lasted over three centuries, from 1613 to 1917, and included some of Russia’s most celebrated rulers.
This 5 kopek, featuring the Romanov coat of arms and the monogram of Tsarina Elizabeth (1741-62), is among the
largest cois ever to circulate.
