The 1939 India 1/4 Rupee coin is a fascinating piece of history. The obverse features the crowned head of King George VI facing left with the inscription ”GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR“ around the edge. The reverse displays the denomination ”1/4 RUPEE INDIA 1939“ in English and Urdu (??? ???), surrounded by a wreath made of roses, thistle, shamrock leaves, and lotus flowers.–1939 was the last year that the ¼ Ruppe coins in India was made with 0.917 (sterling) silver. Starting in 1940, the composition was changed to a quaternary silver alloy with a lower silver content of 0.500.
