The Tamil rulers of the Chola Dynasty created a formal empire that spread from its Southern Indian heartland up into Central India and across to Sri Lanka. Its wider political and cultural influence was felt in the Maldives, Malaysia and Indonesia. Power was projected by a powerful navy that ranged far enough to carried repeated embassies to China. Patrons of Tamil literature and builders of massive temple buildings their influence is still felt today across the region.
