Details

The extenisve 'Conservator (defender)' series of coins were struck during the reign of Gallienus for religious and propoganda purposes. Their exact meaning is now lost to us but given the extenisve and varied nature of the series, it must have had very real significance to the average Roman in the street using the coins. The mythical beasts depicted on them were seen as supernatural protectors of Rome. The animals were those that were hunted and killed in the arena during games that had a special religious purpose designed to safeguard Rome. A LOT, SOLD AS IS
