Details

During his reign, the Jiaqing Emperor endeavored to stem the outflow of silver to pay for opium smuggled into China from British India, with little success. He passed a draconian legal code to suppress the spread of Christianity, with death sentences for Europeans attempting to convert Chinese. Christians who would not repent their conversion were sent to Muslim cities in Xinjiang, to be given as slaves to Muslim leaders and beys. He is also known for renaming neighboring Annam as Vietnam.
