Details

Apollonia or the City of Apollo was famous for its temple with a colossal cult statue of the god Apollo. A reflection of the city’s wealth acquired through trade, it was the work of the famous sculptor Calamis. Reputed to be 45 feet high, the statue was taken as a trophy to Rome by general Marcus Lucullus, when he sacked the city in 72 BCE. The ancient statue, already about 400 years old when it was moved to Rome was subsequently lost in antiquity.
