The city of Halicarnassus was famous for the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, ranked as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The monumental tomb for its eponymous occupant, King Mausolus, was already about 200 years old when this coin was struck, the word Mausoleum is derived from his name.
