Details

One of the great trading cities of Asia Minor, like elsewhere in the region the local cult of the goddess Artemis Anaitis or Anahita the Persian Artemis, was popular, and is here celebrated on this coinage. The goddess in this form was a hybrid of the classical Greek Artemis and the Old Persian goddess Aredvi Sura Anahita. The cosmopolitan culture of Apameia can be seen in shared identify of this deity, with east meeting west.
